,is about, shows, underlines , puts a stress on (an emphasis)

Merci beaucoup
I’m going to talk about the notion of places and power. First of all I would like to give a definition of power. Power can be symbolized by a place, as The White House for exemple. A place can also be a country or state. Power can be political, economical, military, cultural… we can also talk about the power of the media.
In order to illustrate the notion, I have chosen three documents. Two of them are the covers of newspapers the « Daily News » and « the New York Post ». They came out after the election of Donald Trump as the next President of The United States. And the third is a caricature about the Statue of Liberty. To what extent does the media have power in America?
The American Media is powerful in the U.S.A
They have had a strong reputation since the Watergate events which led to the impeachment of Richard Nixon.
Media spread information which is the reflection of the public opinion and its affirmation. The two magazines here show two different points of view about Trump’s election.
1- The first newspaper I have chosen is the Daily News, it is considered centrist and populist. It has endorsed both democrat and republican candidates.
The Daily news shows a negative image of Donald Trump: therefore, we can guess that it’s a democratic press. The headline is « House of horrors » written on a photo of the White House and we can see the American flag returned. Actually, it’s a special election edition. In order to illustrate the title, there are three subtitles. The first one is a pun « Divided States of America », the second subtitle expresses the idea that the election is the beginning of a « national nightmare ». In the third subtitle, we can see the words « crowns » or « King » : this suggests to the readers that Trump wants to be more than a president . He stands (fait figure) more like a King who has total control over the country. These ideas are totally opposed to the « New York Post’s ideas.
2. The New York Post is conservative and populist. The cover shows president Trump smiling and waving with his right hand. The headline says « They said it couldn’t happen President Trump», thanks to this headline we guess that the « New York Post» is a Republican press, as they want to support Trump. Anyway, this cover leads us to believe that Trump’s election is a good thing and that it’s a new hope. It shows that nobody thought that he could make it yet Trump proved them wrong.
3. The caricature of Stantis represents the Statue of liberty after the election of president Trump which has been an upset for some people. The caricature shows president Trump really small and he seems to be making a speech. Then, the statute is thinking “deport me now”, she has her hand with her torch down and seems to be desperate and crying. Normally, the fact that she keeps her hand up with the torch is the symbol of the claim of liberty
So we can underline that both papers have a freedom of expression and are a true form of power.
Conclusion :
To conclude, I would like to say that the media can influence the public opinion. As we have seen, these papers can freely express their ideas, so they can influence their readers. Medias in America have power, bad and good. One of the bad powers of the press is the power of societal manipulation.
Actually the press was used as a propagandist tool and gave false information to the people of the countries at war.
a) For example, Hiltler used the press and posters to show the Jews as greedy.
Conclusion:
Media in the United states and in other countries have a true power: freedom of speech and so the power to convince.. First because they can tell what they think and so tell what the society think. They can influence people.
OU b) In France there is a famous example : the Dreyfus Case, a French soldier was unfairly accused of treason (mainly because people were against Jews). A famous writer stood up for his liberation in the newspaper l'Aurore and wrote a vivid defence, titled by Clémenceau himself « J'accuse » in 1898. It helped people change their minds and reopen the case and led to the Dreyfus’ verdict of innocence. So, because of reading this letter, many people who initially thought Dreyfus was a criminal, changed their minds.
OU
c) The press is considered as the Fourth Power in the United States, as journalistes can influence political life by exposing scandals and disclosing information.
One of the most famous episodes is the Watergate Scandal in 1973, in wich reporters of the Washington Post revealed that the Republican Party had been spying on the Democrates. It had led President Nixon to resign.

Bonjour,

I’m going to talk about the notion of places and power. First of all I would like to give a definition of power. Power can be symbolized by a place, as The White House for example. A place can also be a country or state. Power can be political, economic(economical est un PIEGE il signifie économique dans le sens de peu cher), military, cultural… we can also talk about the power of the media.
In order to illustrate the notion, I have chosen three documents. Two of them are the covers of newspapers the « Daily News » and « the New York Post ». They came out after the election of Donald Trump as President of The United States. And the third is a caricature about the Statue of Liberty.I have chosen to discuss the topic " To what extent do the media hold the power in the United States?"
The American Media is powerful in the U.S.A and regarded as independent.(first amendement of the Constitution is the freedom of speech)
They have had a strong reputation since the Watergate events which led to the impeachment of Richard Nixon in 1974 (?)
The media in general spread information which reflect the public opinion and also influences it.. The two magazines(regarde bien , ce ne sont pas de journaux, papers?) here show two different points of view on Trump’s election.
1- The first newspaper I have chosen is the Daily News, it is considered centrist and populist. It has endorsed both democrat and republican candidates.
The Daily news shows a negative image of Donald Trump. The headline is « House of horrors » written on a photo of the White House and we can see the American flag returned(retourné: flipped over). Actually, it’s a special election edition. There are also three subtitles. The first one is a pun « Divided States of America », the second one expresses the idea that the election is the beginning of a « national nightmare ». In the third subtitle, we can see the words « crowns » or « King » : this suggests to the readers that Trump wants to be morea king than a president . ) He may want total control over the country. These ideas are totally opposed to the New York Post’s .
2. The New York Post is conservative and populist. The cover shows president Trump smiling and waving with his right hand. The headline is « They said it couldn’t happen President Trump», thanks to this headline we guess that the « New York Post» is close to Republican ideas (tu te souviens, je t'avais dit que c'était dangereux de dire cela , de mettre des étiquettes "politiques" sur le presse américaine?), as they seem to support Trump. Trump’s election is seen as good thing and a new hope. It also shows that nobody thought that he could make it yet Trump proved them wrong.
3. The caricature of Stantis represents the Statue of liberty after the election of president Trump which has upset half of America . The caricature shows president Trump really small and he seems to be making a speech. The statue is thinking “deport me now”, she has her hand with her torch down and seems to be desperate and crying.
So we can underline that both papers have a true freedom of speech . Things have shifted (bougé) lately because President Trump keeps tweeting that the media are his enemy and this is unprecedented
Conclusion :
As we have seen, these papers can freely express their ideas, so they can influence their readers. Media in America have power, :here we have seen two newspapers but of course political TV shows such as the late show by Steven Colbert on CBS have this free tone to them.
In France the 'J'accuse' by Zola is one of our historical example : the Dreyfus Case, a French soldier was unfairly accused of treason (mainly because people were against Jews). A famous writer stood up for his liberation in the newspaper l'Aurore and wrote a vivid defence, titled by Clémenceau himself « J'accuse » in 1898. It helped people change their minds , Zola having himself tried to reopen the case and led to the Dreyfus’ verdict of innocence
In the Watergate scandal in 1973 , jornalists were at the origin of Nixon's impeachment: this is why the press is considered as the Fourth Power in the United States, as journalists can influence political life by exposing scandals and disclosing information.

donc sur places and forms of power.

I am going to talk about the notion “Places and forms of power”. First, I’d like to give a definition of the notion. Power is a term that covers a multitude of issues and definitional nuances. Power is the ability to influence or control the behavior of others. Or it is the political or social authority exercised by a government or institution. We may ask: What are the reasons which could lead one to say that a sheet of paper has such significant power in our contemporary world? I’m going to speak about the power of music, and afterwards the power of comic strips and Medias.
To begin with, music is really important in our way of lives. Every day we listen to music. That’s why we studied a song called “I wish I was a punk rocker” by Sandi Thom. This song is about a regret. She wrote this song because she lost her smartphone. Sandi Thom regrets the good old day about 2 periods of time when 2 music styles revolutionized music and stood as counter power. She is opposing our present and 70’s and 60’s. She thinks that music was a tool to convey messages. She’s opposing generation Y to baby boomers generation and generation X. The generation Y is my generation; the Y refers to the wires of headphones. They symbolize the connected generation. They are self-centeredness, and they don’t have a cause. The baby boomers generation is a generation with a goal: they had to rebuild the world after WW2. They lived during an economic boost. Finally, the generation X is composed of people born in 70’s/80’s. It’s a lost generation without any identity because of the Crisis and the cold war. In her song, Sandi criticize today’s music and new technologies, the consumption society. So, music has a power. Sandi Thom proves that Punk and Rock’n roll inspired her. Moreover, music can change mind, music is seen as a soft counter power.
Secondly, we saw an extract from the original comic strip series of the walking dead. It’s a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, humanity has been altered, so Rick, the main character, and his friends try to survive and to find a way of escape. In this extract, Rick committed a murder to protect all the survivors. In fact, fictional characters are struggling for power. It is all about how human tries to get power and who will get the power to guide the group. Comic strips are a form of power because it gives a viewpoint on countries in another world. For example, here in this extract it gives the viewpoint of the writer on America with the Patriot Act, death penalty etc.
Finally, we’ve studied an article from the New-York Times entitled “On India’s farms, a plague of suicide”. It shows the consequences of the green Revolution on a person called Anil in India who committed suicide because of the Green Revolution. However, here the real hero is not Anil but the writer of this article. In fact, as the New-York Times is the most read newspaper in New-York and mainly in USA, it permitted to reveal to the whole world an international problem. This article enabled to raise the world’s awareness. So, newspapers are really powerful because in the world, lots of people read daily newspaper to be informed of what is going in the world.
Ton conclude, through this 3 examples we show that there is different forms of power. Indeed, I think that Medias have lost of power because they are at the basis of the information so they exercise some power.

Correction de la notion Places and forms of power.
I am going to talk about the notion “Places and forms of power”. First,(beaucoup d'élèves mettent ou disent first ,je pense qu'il vaut mieux dire firstly ou first of all) I’d like to give a definition of this notion. Power is a term that covers a multiplicity of issues . Power is , for instance, the ability to influence or to control others' behaviors. It can also be the political or social or even economic authority exercised by a government or an institution. We may ask ourselves: What are the reasons which could lead one to say that a piece of paper has such significant power in our contemporary world? Let us take more concrete examples of this "piece of paper " and deal with the power of music, the power of comic strips and finally the media.
To begin with, music is really important in our everyday life style. We listen to music a lot . Let us have a closer look at a song called “I wish I was a punk rocker” by Sandi Thom written in ........ This song is about a regret. She wrote this song because she lost her smartphone. Sandi Thom regrets the good old days about two periods of time when two music styles were in her eyes a revolution in the musical landscape in the 60's and the 70's(il faut que tu donnes les deux grands styles musicaux) For her , music stands as as counter power which is not the case for her now. She thinks that music was a tool to convey messages. OUI !!!Finally, the generation X is composed of people born in 70’s/80’s. De plus ce paragraphe est trop long. without any identity because of the Crisis and the cold war(qui a commencé juste après la seconde GM et c'est achevée fin 1990) In her song, Sandi criticize today’s music and new technologies, the consumption society.(qui a existé à partir des années 1960....) So, music has a power. Sandi Thom proves that Punk and Rock’n roll inspired her.IL FAUT REVOIR CE PARAGRAPHE :il est trop long, imprecis, mélangent des faits et des epoques....
Secondly, let's us talk about an extract from the original comic strip series of the Walking Dead. It’s a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, humanity has been altered, so Rick, the main character and his friends try to survive and to find a way to escape. In this extract, Rick committed a murder to protect all the survivors. In fact, the characters are struggling for power. It is all about how human beings try to get power and who will get the power to guide the group. Comic strips are a form of power because it gives a viewpoint(?) on countries in another world. For example, here in this extract it gives the viewpoint of the writer on America with the Patriot Act, death penalty etc.DONC je dirai plutôt: Comic Strips are a means given to the writer to express , via trivial stories sometimes, his point of view on significant isues such as here The Patriotic Act in the United States(il faut que tu le connaisses , ta prof pourra t'interroger) or on death penalty. Therefore we can say that the author may have some form of power over his readers,he can influence them.
Finally, we can take a closer look at an article from the New-York Times entitled “On India’s farms, a plague of suicide”. It shows the consequences of the green Revolution on a person called Anil in India who committed suicide because of the Green Revolution. However, here the real(and sad) hero is not Anil but the writer of this article. In fact, as the New-York Times is the most read newspaper in New-York City (tu peux aller chercher des chiffres sur wikipedia pour être précis) and mainly in USA(non, vas voir les chiffres), it is a strong tool to reveal to the whole world an international problem. This article enabled to raise the world’s awareness. So, newspapers can be really powerful because in the world, lots(ce n'est plus vrai helas, les gens lisent beaucoup moins ,ils préfèrent jouer sur leurs portables!!)donc pas "lots " mais "some" people nowadays still read daily (inutile de mettre daily ,un Journal est JOURnalier!) (c'est comme les fictional characters, un personnage EST fictif) newspapers to be informed of what is going in the world and when there is a important piece of news , it is widely spread on the net.
To conclude, through this 3 examples we show that there is different forms of power. Indeed, I think that Medias have lost of power because they are at the basis of the information so they exercise some power.: je propose:
To conclude, we have seen three examples of forms of power , with the same base: paper. We must underline however that other media, such as television , internet are also means to express or convey ideas and opinions. What is worrying today is that , unlike before, people seem to not believe all that is written or said and that the 45th president of the USA ,Donald Trump , is openly attacking medias .
:)

Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In 77 and 69 revolution was in the air
I was born to lead and to a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
When the head of state didn't play guitar,
Not everybody drove a car,
When music really mattered and when radio was king,
When accountants didn't have control
And the media couldn't buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn't know everything
When popstars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when God Saved the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
When my mom and dad were in their teens
And anarchy was still a dream
And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail
When record shops were still on top
And vinyl was all that they stocked
And the super info highway was still drifting out in space
Kids were wearing hand me downs,
And playing games meant kick arounds
And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face
I was born too late to a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

The singer ..........is a young girl British girl in her thirties. In this song she says she regrets not having been a punk rocker (in the late 70s) or a hippie (in the 60s) She puts forward the ideas that things were simpler, maybe also relationships between human beings. The Punk formed a group and protested against the codes of a consumerist society (just like the Hippies before them)They were more involved into political matters, the hippies being againt the Vietnam war and part of a worldwide movement which rejected violence (although they used it to make their point) and money .Young people rebelled ,they embodied a form of power ,: in fact they were called the Flower Power . Punks were more strongly against the codes of society and even if some of them had just 'the looks" , with different hair styles of all colours ans pierced earings on their bodies , others derived into a more dangerous form of power , being at the heart of harsh protest and opening the way to skin heads (who provocked a reat deal of trouble , causing deaths in football stadium )
The tune of the song is very catchy and if the singer has a point in saying that people were more into groups and maybe more involved into social matters , we must not forget that a lot of hippies died on drugs and once more that the punk movement was not always appropriate.
I think that every generation has a cause to fight even if it is not obvious at the present time. We must not always say "that it was better before" because only good memories
Maybe our children will be proud of us that we lived in a time of conflict where Isis (mot anglais pour Daesh ) could hit and kill everywhere and was a real threat. We cannot answer back as a community or a power because it is dangerous to be in large groups but we gathered for the "Je suis Charlie" when it was still possible and in our hearts we are also a community that has the power to say "no" to terrorism.

Bonsoir,
Je viens de présenter une autre notion "Places and forms of power" j'aimerais avoir vos avis! Pouvez vous me corriger svp?
I'm going to talk about the notion of Places and forms of power. To introduce this notion, I would like to give a definition of this concept : Places could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power, for example Buckingham Palace, a symbol of the British monarchy,Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and other places. Power is the ability to influence the behavior of people. There are different types of power. it may be economic, political, psychological. In order to live together members of a community accept rules, regulations, laws. This helps to create social cohesion but can also lead to conflicts and tensions. We may answer the question: Does everybody in US approve the gun legislation? At first, I am going to be interested in the population favorable to this legislation. For that purpose, I am going to take the example of Mickaël Patrick and in particular the slaughter in "Sandy Hook". Secondly, I chose the document called "Brady Campaign" and I am going to show that everybody does not accept firearms.
To illustrate our problem, we are going to be interested at first in the population favorable to this legislation that is the carrying of firearms. For example, the Second Amendement to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms and was adopted on December 15, 1791, as part of the first ten amendments contained in the Bill of Rights. All the American population is thus authorized legally to possess a firearms.
However, with the authorization to buy and to carry firearms, many people consider the firearm as a game, can represent a real danger. We can quote the example of Michael Patrick, a teenager wanted to take his revenge because at the school he was a victim of harassment. He wanted to frightened to his companions with a false bomb. This attitude shows once again that firearms are considered as a game and students are not really conscious of the impact can have engender. I think also in particular of the slaughter which took place in " Sandy Hook "the elementary school on December 14th, 2012, in the United States, causing the death of 28 people among which 27 children and also his mother.
Now i will move on to my second part. The document I will use to illustrate my points with is “Brady Campaign” and I am going to show that everybody does not accept firearms. This campaign generally target the general population. In fact, their aim is to make people reject gun culture. They kill a considerable number of Americans each year. It is an association which wants to raise people's awareness, the objective is to change the law, to forbid the right to buy and to carry firearms in the United States. The campaigners goals are to highlight the severity of the matter of gun crime in the United States in particular.
To conclude, I shall say that the American citizens don't need weapons to defend themselves. Firearms bring violence and incite to commit crimes. Many people die every year from firearms. These firearms are a real danger and it would be necessary to forbid them everywhere, and especially in schools because the children see firearms as games. To possess a firearm is the door open to any freedom. Various associations are present to make sensitive people, to make them understand that the firearm is dangerous and that it is necessary to forbid it.

Places and forms of power
I will present the notion "Places and forms of power". To speak of power is to speak of the relations established in our society between different members to exercise a right, an action on someone or something. To illustrate this notion, I will talk about the gun control in the USA. In America, bear a weapon is legal since 1791 with the Second Amendment. However, some people want to limit this law and to establish gun control. We will answer the question ''To what extent is gun control a topical issue in the USA ?''. First, I will talk about the consequences of the right to bear arms and then, I will explain why gun control can't be installed in the USA.
Firstly, I will talk about the consequences of the right to bear arms in the USA. In this country, there are many crimes or attacks with guns. As we can see in a poster of Brady campaign, in one year, guns murdered about 9 500 people in the USA. This number is really huge and it is much higher than in other countries where guns are controlled or prohibited like in Finland (17 dead), in Australia (35 dead) or in Germany (194 dead). In the USA, many shootings took place. In 1999, two students shot many people at Columbine High School, in Littleton, in Colorado. It was the most deadly shooting in a high school. In 2016, in Orlando, 50 people died in a shooting which took place in a nightclub frequented by gay people. It was the must deadly shooting of the US' story. These two shootings, like all other shootings, have upset american people.
So, the right to bear arms is at the origin of many shootings and many deaths. But, tragedies are repeated without changing anything.
Secondly, I will explain why gun control can't be installed in the USA. After the shooting in Orlando, Barack Obama wanted to take measures to control weapons and to avoid other shootings. For example, he wanted to make background checks compulsory. But, as all previous times, he didn't succeeded. Indeed, many American people feel safer with guns. They don't want to give them up. They have the right to bear weapons since the 2nd Amendment was written. It is in the law. Moreover, some lobbies make pressure on politicians to prevent them to set measures. It is the case of the NRA (National Rifle Association). Ten days after Columbine, Charlton Heston, the leader of the NRA come to Littleton for a big pro-gun rally. He said that nobody would stop him from carrying a gun and expressing his opinion. Despite the mourning, he has managed to rally many people.
So, american presidents or politicians try to establish a gun control, but, they are stopped by lobbies which put forward their rigths and the Second Amendment.
To conclude, on the one hand, weapons murdered many people and are at the origin of many shootings in the USA. But, on the other hand, american people don't want to establish a gun control because they have the right to bear arms since the 2nd Amendment. Furthermore, they are manipulate by lobbies. So, gun control is a topical issue in the USA.
